CDS uses state of the art processes to insure compliance for our customers, protecting them from EPA disposal violations, privacy compliance and data destruction meeting and exceeding Department of Defense standards for FACTA, FERPA, HIPAA, S/O, etc., while protecting our environment and creating jobs in Indian Country.
Our e-waste disposal process:
E-waste is taken from the customer site...
...to CDS where all internal and external identification is tagged and removed; then parts are tested and removed with new asset tags generated internally. This process is performed in a benign, secured area where it remains until all data and customer information is destroyed. CDS uses air and water (high powered) to destroy asset tag, serial numbers, and other identifying marks on units. We do not use hazardous chemicals for our process.
Then data is wiped in an 4-8 hour wipe meeting DoD compliance or if requested hard drives are shredded.
Once your unit is cleaned of all data, it is sent for testing to determine any usable parts, then dis-assembled. Note that computers running softwear hard drive destruction are not connected to any outside communication source, nor do they have capability to generate or copy information.
The disassembled parts are then taken to the smelters where lead is separated from the glass for reuse in manufacturing and not dumped into a landfill, poisoning our environment.

Shredding
CDS uses Security Engineered Machinery Disintegrators for document destruction. Our SEM Disintegrator has been evaluated by NSA and with the standard 3/32" Screen, meets the requirements of NSA/CSS Specification 02-02, High Security Disintegrators and NSA/CSS 04-02, Optical Media Destruction Devices.

Cherokee Data Solutions now offers custom electronic waste disposal services. We can take your old electronics and dispose of them securely. For hard drives, we can wipe off the data to your specification, or use DoD 5220.22-M three-pass or seven-pass standards.
However, please review the number of passes that you really require to safeguard your data. Performing a wipe is a time-consuming process and is exacerbated by the fact that relative to their capacity modern hard drives are slow.
If you need to guarantee that your data is wiped, then a wipe done to the U.S. Department of Defense's 5220.22-M (8-306. /E) standard will over-wipe all addressable hard drive locations with a character, its complement and a random character followed by verification. This process is completed three times and prevents data from being recovered by commercially available processes.
DoD 5220.22-M (8-306. /E, C & E) is a seven-pass wipe and is only required for the most sensitive of information.
In the fall of 2004, the U.S. National Security Agency found that a single overwrite using DoD 5220.22-M compliant software is sufficient to render electronic files unrecoverable (NSA Advisory LAA-006-2004). CDS can also physically destroy your hard drives if they are already damaged.
